We are a couple of weeks into the changes that came into effect for Construction Related Occupation Cards which happened on 1st October 2015. From this date the following changes happened:
- All CRO cards issued from 1st October 2015 will expire on 30th September 2017* and are not renewable
- You will be expected to register for a nationally recognised construction related qualification before the card expires
- Only one occupation will be displayed on your CRO card from 1stOctober 2015
- CSCS will stop issuing CRO cards from 31st March 2017.
This change has been introduced as CSCS now want to ensure that all construction operatives hold the necessary qualifications for the CSCS Card that they are in possession of.
CSCS’s primary objective is to provide evidence that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications for the type of work they carry out.

What does this mean for Structured Network Engineers?
You may have years and years of experience but there is now a requirement for you to hold the necessary industry related occupation qualification to demonstrate that you have the right level of knowledge and competence.
The is a data cable NVQ which allows the successful candidate to apply for a CSCS Gold Card. The benefit of a CSCS Gold Card is that you can access any site at any time without supervision.
The course is designed to make this as painless as possible for data cable engineers. Candidates need to build a portfolio of evidence – there are no lessons, classes, tests or exams
The portfolio covers a number of units including health & safety, working with copper cabling and we also have fibre units for fibre engineers. Other units include testing cables, defining customer requirements and the mandatory personal development unit.
The evidence required is a mixture of documents, videos, worksheets and online questions.
